Black-Glazed Miniature Chytra, Athens, 5th Century BC

Rare black glazed vessel with rounded body and marked shoulder angle. A delicate protrusion at the bottom giving the effect of a disk foot, a central knob on the base.

The chytra was a kitchen vessel used in Athens. Imitation of kitchen shapes in finer ware is not common.

For an identical vessel cf. item no. 1400 in B.A. Sparkes, L. Talcott. The Athenian Agora. Black and Plain Pottery. Vol. 12. Princeton 1970.

Intact and of museum quality.

H. 5.4 cm (2.1 cm), D. 5.9 cm (2.3 in)
