Near Eastern Bust, Presumably from Syria, 3rd to 1st Millennium BC

Small jet amulet depicting a human bust with neatly carved features such as vivid eyes below a projecting forehead and detailed ears. Drilled circles for the breasts and notches for the sternum and the spine. Two incised lines on the back to indicate some sort of cloak.

Jet (lignite) is fossilized wood much valued in ancient times to manufacture jewelry.

Broken at the chest level; nose and mouth area flat. A drilled hole for suspension on the back of the head.
