Anatolian Female Sphinx, Early 1st Millennium BC

Shell limestone Anatolian sphinx with the body of a recumbent lion with short forepaws, the tail turning over the right haunch.

The female head showing a receding forehead, large eyes, heavy cheeks and full lips. Tresses to both sides of face and a queue down the neck.

Small section of the forepaws and of the plinth missing. Otherwise excellent condition with lively asymmetric carving.
