Boeotian Terracotta Goddess, Archaic Period, 550-525 BC

Female figure with flat body and outstretched arms. The elongated face shows a pointed nose and a prominent chin. The goddess is wearing a flaring polos with a petal-like top.

The figure is rendered as a plank idol much like the wooden cult images used in Archaic Greece.

The idol might have been purposely broken before it was ritually buried in a depository (botros).

Reconstituted from four fragments. Petals of the crown, arms and tip of the nose restored. Remains of the original white coat.

H. 24.4 cm (9.6 in)
