Etruscan Chalice, 620-580 BC

Cream clay shallow bowl with a flared rim enhanced with burgundy and with two lugs for suspension. The high stemmed foot with a central molding, standing on a flat stepped base.

Decorated with bands, brown-glazed and reserved areas. The shape reminds Etruscan thymiateria which were used as incense burners.

Similar Etrusco-Corinthian chalices have been found in the Vulci area. For related items cf. CVA Grosseto, Museo Archeologico e d’Arte della Maremma 2, 29, plate (2854) 37.1

Foot reattached to the bowl, otherwise intact and of pristine condition. The foot with remains of rust.
