Rare Daunian Goblet with Birds, Subgeometric II, 550-400 BC

Daunian goblet with single strap handle and conical foot decorated with bluish-black and umber bands.

The frieze with three double-horned elements, two of them with small square steps on the right. The field is filled with carefully rendered birds.

The shape is rare and thought to come from Canosa. For related goblets cf. fig. no. 42 in: J. Chamay, Ch. Courtois. L’art Premier des Iapyges. Geneva 2002.

Intact and of pristine condition. Applied colors with minor pitting. Sinter in places.
