Daunian High Handle Jug with Geometric Pattern, 500-475 BC

Daunian bag-shaped vessel with a high strap handle broadening just above the join to the short flared rim.

The handle with vestigial horns on top, a frieze of diamonds and pierced apotropaic eyes contoured red. Between them a red rectangle with three tiny points inside.

The body decorated with red and bluish bands.

Similar jugs from Ordona have been dated to the early 5th century BC – cf. fig. no. 48, p. 34 in: F. Rossi. Ceramica Geometrica Daunia della Collezione Ceci Macrini. Bari 1979.

Part of the rim reattached with a small restored section. Otherwise intact and of fine condition.
