Terracotta Head of a Woman, Hellenistic Period, 250-200 BC

Elongated head of serene expression showing a prominent nose, fleshy lips and a round chin. The heavy lids narrow the eyes to slits.

The free-modeled hairdo is parted at center and topped by a crown.

The head orientates on Hellenistic types and is most likely from Egypt.

For a close head cf. lot 1186 in: W. Schürmann. Katalog der antiken Terrakotten im Badischen Landesmuseum Karlsruhe. Göteborg 1989.

H. 6.1 cm (2.4 in), H. with stand 15.3 cm (6 in)

The head was taken from two molds and much reworked with the modeling stick. Bridge of the nose and chin with minor wear. Crazes at rear. Fingerprint on the forehead.
