Apulian Gnathia Ware Skyphos, 340-330 BC

Skyphos decorated with a profusion of stylized vine-branches (Oxford vine) which enclose a tiny alabastron and a wreath at center. Above several bands within incised lines.

The rear with a row of white tongues, incised lines and dotted triangles. A rosette and hooks at center, flanked by two hanging leaf-sprays.

Graceful shape with steep wall and horizontal handles attached just below the rim. Standing on a low ring base.

Reassembled from fragments. A small triangle of fill below the right handle. Brilliant black glaze with good preservation of the applied white, yellow and red color. Surface with minor pitting in places.
