Attic Red-Figure Kylix by the Pithos Painter, 510-500 BC

Cup with a reclining male figure wearing a kidaris (lappet cap or Phrygian cap). The youth is leaning to the left with his head turned to the right. His body is seen from behind.

Below a drinking horn rendered in black glaze and some cushions.

Symposium scenes are a distinctive motif of the Pithos painter, an early red-figure artist known for his masterly abstraction.

Rather close in design is item no. 128 in: John Boardman. Athenian Red Figure Vases: The Archaic Period. London 1975

Reconstituted from large fragments. Black glaze on the outside slightly worn in places.
