Messapian Trozella of the Floral Zigzag Group, 425-400 BC

Bellied trozella on a small foot, the short neck with a collar-shaped rim. High, angular strap handles with roundels on the highest point and at the base.

Metopic panels of chequer and hour-glasses on the neck , the shoulder with ‘knotted zigzag’ and a branch with pointed leafs.

Shape and scheme of decoration belong to the Floral Zigzag Group, which is discussed pp. 51-53 in: D. G. Yntema. “Messapian Painted Pottery”, in Bulletin Antieke Beschaving 1974, pp. 3-84.

Superb condition with good preservation of the applied decoration. One roundel missing and minor chips out of the foot.
