Egyptian Terracotta Whistle in the Shape of a Swallow, Roman Period, 1st/4th Century AD

Egyptian swallow standing on short feet. The mouthpiece of a whistle on the bird’s tail; the sharp edge to direct the airstream joins the vent hole beneath the body.

The item shows black painted details like the eye-line, a collar around the chest and folded wings.

For another bird-shaped whistle cf. item no. UC357090 in the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology.

Intact with surface incrustation. The grained clay worn in places.

Collection of Pilar Muņiz de Camahort, acquired in the 1950s. Pilar Muņiz de Camahort was married to Ricardo Muņiz y Verdugo, Minister Counselor in the Spanish Embassy to King Farouk and later President Nasser.
