Egyptian Athena Head Lantern Top, Roman Period, 150-200 AD

Top of a lantern in the shape of a helmeted Athena head with a large suspension loop on top. The slightly bent head with wide upward looking eyes and fleshy lips.

The parted hairdo with wavy curls emerging below the triangular helmet. Corkscrew locks running to both sides of the neck.

The combination of Athena with lamps goes back to the equation of Athena with the Egyptian goddess Neith and her festival of lights at Sais.

Broken below the neck, bust and lantern below missing. Back side reattached. Nose abraded. Neat fingerprint over the Venus folds on the neck.
