Egyptian Terracotta Head of a Bearded Man, 27th Dynasty, 525-404 BC

Large bearded head possibly representing a Syrian.

The strong archaic features show a furrowed brow, bulged eyebrows, globular eyes and heavy cheeks. The plain beard with a vertically cut mustache encloses the protruding lips.

The hairdo with carefully set globular locks, a diadem and combed hair on top.

For a related head supposedly from Dionysos or perhaps related to Persian iconography cf. item no. UC47866 in the Petrie Museum.

Rare head with flat back. Chip out of the beard, nose worn. Outside edge chipped. Remains of blue pigment in the cavities of the locks.
