Manichaean Syriac Incantation Bowl with Woman, 5th-7th Century AD

Syriac Aramaic bowl inscribed in Manichaean script with a five line text written for Gušnay, daughter of Ahat.

The spell asks for healing and protection of Gušnay’s house, her possessions, daughters and servants.

Parallel to the rim the drawing of a woman wearing rich garments and an elaborate headdress. With her left hand she is holding a thread that encircles the entire upper edge of the bowl; with the other hand she seems to clasps her right breast.

Magic symbols are written on the figure’s chest and further on the eight sections in center.

Reconstituted from fragments. Fine condition.
