Gothic Stone Head, Possibly Italian, ca. 1300 AD

Veiled head with small almond shape eyes, a prominent well preserved nose and pointed lips. The locks on the temples still show traces of yellow pigment. Partially covered ears and remains of a veil behind.

The upper part of the head has been reworked and chiseled off. The roughened surface with remains of plaster used to render the new calotte.

Pleasant courtly aesthetic characteristic for the Christian mystic movement of the period.

The material is most likely nenfro, a volcanic stone common in central Italy.

High quality stonemasonry. Fine condition.

H. 14.3 cm (5.6 in), H. w. stand 23 cm (9.05 in)
