Xenon Ware Trefoil Oinochoe, Apulian, 400-350 BC

Trefoil lipped oinochoe with high arched handle. The flat shoulder decorated with rays in applied red, a downward wave pattern and a laurel wreath with berries around the ovoid body.

The pronounced modeling orientates on more expensive jugs made in metal.

For a related vase cf. item no. 192 in: John W. Hayes. Greek and Italian Black-Gloss Wares and Related Wares in the Royal Ontario Museum. Toronto 1984.

Pristine quality and condition. Brilliant black glaze and superb preservation of the applied red color. Edge of the foot peeled off, otherwise intact.
