Early Corinthian Aryballos Attributed to the Hamburg Ox-Head Painter, ca. 600 BC

Fine globular vessel decorated with an heraldic ox head flanked by antithetical birds.

The ox with a flat crown with 'tonsured bangs' over the brow, incised triangles at the corners of the eyes and horizontal lines across the face.

Double vertical line between the nostrils.

The bottom with a whirligig underneath. The mouth tongued with dots on the outside rim.

The style is characteristic of the Hamburg Ox-Head Painter. Cf. pp. 120 and pl. no. 50 in: D. A. Amyx. Corinthian Vase Painting of the Archaic Period. Berkeley 1988.

Rim fragment reattached. Surface and glaze peeled off or worn in places. Applied red.
