Etruscan Bucchero Oinochoe with Panthers, 550-500 BC

The ovoid body with a frieze of four panthers taken from the same mold alternating with slender gadroons. The prancing felines with tails curled on their backs.

A zigzag and four grooves on the neck. The shoulder is decorated with pronounced molded tongues. Horizontal ribs on the body. Single handle with rotelles at the rim.

For closely related vases presumably from a Vulci workshop cf. items no. 253 and 254 in: I. Stucker. Italy of the Etruscans. Mainz 1991.

Weathered grayish bucchero pensante with traces of the original black coating. Two chipped shards attached to the spreading foot and craze around the belly fixed.
