Syrio-Hittite Terracotta Duck Rattle, 2nd Millennium BC

Hollow rattle in the shape of a duck with its head and neck turned around and resting on the back. The hand-modeled toy with indicated beak and eyes.

The shape reminds of Syrian duck weights.

Small terracotta figures representing animals as well as humans have been unearthed in the western Euphrates area. For a comparable bird figurine cf. lot no. 338 in: L’Eufrate e il Tempo. Exhibition catalogue. Rimini 1993.

Intact. Tempered light clay with minor surface wear. Vent hole close to the short stemmed foot.
