Egyptian Squatting Sakhmet, Egyptian, Late Period, 712-30 BC

Bronze lion-headed Sakhmet with the sun disc and uraeus headdress. Striated tripartite wig.

The goddess is squatting with her knees drawn up to the chest and is wearing a tight fitted dress that reduces her body to a block-like shape.

Block statues are a characteristic Egyptian creation that first emerged during the Middle Kingdom.

Sakhmet was originally the warrior goddess and also healer and protectress against epidemics.

Intact, fine condition. Nice green and cuprite patina. On old wood mount.

H. 4.4 cm (1.7 in), H. with stand 7.1 cm (2.8 in)

Private NYC collection, acquired in the 1950s - 60s, to present owner by descent.
