Lucanian Volute Krater Attributed to the Creusa Painter, 380-370 BC

Elaborate vase showing a youth leaning on a pillar and a woman near an Ionic column.

On the back side draped youths with rather heavy heads characteristic for the Creusa Painter's late creative period.

Black-figure palmettes on one side of the neck, red-figure ivy on the other. Black ivy leaves on the volutes.

Published as vase 428a in: A.D. Trendall. The Red-figured Vases of Lucania, Campania and Sicily. First Supplement. London 1970.

Fine condition. Missing area on the foot and a chip out of a volute. Scratches on the front side.
