Attic Black-figure Olpe with Satyr and Maenad, ca. 490-480 BC

Black-figure dionysiac scene showing a dancing maenad followed by an ithyphallic satyr.

Tall vessel with torus foot and ribbed handle with arms extending onto the rim.

Checkerbone pattern on the front rim, below a meander and linked pomegranates.

Faded white for the female skin. Applied red for the fillet, the beard and tail of the satyr, the ground line and two lines inside the neck.

Reconstituted from fragments. Brilliant glaze. Face of the maenad slightly scratched. Fine condition.
