Greek Ionian Type Kylix, South Italy, circa 550 BC

Black-glazed kylix of Ionian shape showing a rounded bowl with high steep rim and slightly tilted handles attached on the belly.

The interior shows concentric lines in applied red.

The present example may be a South Italian Greek colonial product, imitating Rhodian and Attic types of the first half of the 6th century BC.

For a kylix of similar shape and size, cf. item no. 4, pp. 6-7 in: John W. Hayes. Greek and Italian Black-Gloss Wares and Related Wares in the Royal Ontario Museum. Toronto 1984.

Intact, excellent quality and condition. The black glaze speckled brown in places and keeping shiny areas.

H. 6 cm (2.4 in), D. 11.4 cm (4.5 in)
W. over handles 15.7 cm (6.2 in)

Ex German private collection W. Ressmann, Hessen; from the estate of Christina Lussheimer, Cologne, deceased 2006.
