Greek Early Classical Figure of a Bovine, ex Ernst Pfuhl, 5th Century BC

Full-bodied young bovine standing on short legs.

The massive head with short horns, protruding eyes and bulging muzzle. Skin folds around the neck, tail indicated.

Moldmade hollow figure, small vent hole between the hind legs.

White slip all over, remains of yellow ochre and pink pigment. Root marks.

The ink inscription on the bottom refers to Fischer's 1941 sale and reads 234-B1404-ist pe.

Intact. Excellent modeling, nice early classical style.

L. 9.5 cm (3.7 in), H. 5.5 m (2.2 in)

Ex collection of Ernst Pfuhl (1876-1940), Basel, renowned classical archaeologist and art historian.

Thence Galerie Fischer Luzern, 21 May 1941 sale, part of lot 234 (with copy of the catalogue entry).

Auction house owner Theodor Fischer gifts the piece to a friend in July 02, 1941 (copy of the accompanying note and list of objects joined).
