Entrance to the Uxmal Palace, Yucatan, 1852

Print of the palace entrance in the Mayan city of Uxmal in Yucatan, Mexico.

Designed by Jean Arnould Leveil (1806-1866) after the drawing (sepia ink and wash on wove paper) of Frederic Catherwood (1799-1854) from 1843, entitled: Archway, Casa del Gobernador, Uxmal, Yucatan.
Engraved by Jean Baptiste Marie Bury.

The print was edited as fourth of twelve depictions of the ruins of Uxmal in the appendix of volume 4 in: Jules Gailhabaud. Monuments anciens et modernes: Collection formant une histoire de l'architecture des différents peuples à toutes les époques. Paris 1853.

Thick paper printed with engraved steel plates. Edges of the paper lightly browned and fingerstained. Thin paper glued to the side to protect the print.
