Rare Roman Phallic Amulet, 1st-3rd Century AD

Rare bronze amulet in the shape of a clenched fist with a protruding middle finger. Rounded elements that may be meant to represent the pubic hair above and the testicles below. The central portion with incised lines and dots.

The amulet shows an hourglass shape with a transverse loop at the top. The back is flat and featureless.

Phallic amulets could have decorated a variety of objects, from horse trappings to lamps. Their symbolism provided them with an apotropaic, protective function.
